How to Transition from Corporate to Private Equity

Thinking About a Move from Corporate to Private Equity?

You’re not alone. Every week, we hear from senior executives who have had stellar corporate careers and are now eyeing the fast-paced, high-impact world of private equity. But making the leap isn’t just about changing companies — it’s about changing your approach, your mindset, and even how you talk about your experience.

Here’s what to know if you’re ready to transition into a private equity-backed leadership role.

1. Understand the Private Equity Operating Model

In a PE-backed company, time is compressed. The focus is on value creation in 3–5 years, not 10. That means faster decision-making, leaner teams, and more accountability.

Key takeaway: Your corporate wins matter — but you’ll need to frame them through a value creation lens. Think EBITDA impact, cash flow improvements, scalability, or exit readiness.

2. Reposition Your Resume and Pitch

PE investors and operating partners aren’t impressed by vague corporate language. Avoid phrases like “transformed global operations” without specifics. Instead, say:

  • “Reduced supply chain costs by $8.2M through supplier consolidation”
  • “Drove 420bps margin expansion over 18 months through pricing optimization and COGS reduction”

3. Develop a PE-Specific Network

You don’t need 100 new contacts. You need 10–15 of the right ones: PE operating partners, executive recruiters in the PE space, and senior leaders already in portfolio companies.

Attend invite-only PE events. Join a community like the Thrive PE Executive Community. Show up with value, not just your resume.

And lastly but not least, some of the most valuable contacts you have include your bankers, lawyers and consultants. Talk to them and let them know you are looking to get into PE. Many of them have direct lines to PE clients.

4. Show You Can Handle the Pace

Portfolio companies don’t have the luxury of long onboarding ramps. You need to demonstrate you can deliver results quickly, work without a safety net, and build execution-focused teams.

5. Get Smart on PE-Specific Interviewing

Interviews will be different — more technical, more metrics-driven, and often led by deal or ops professionals. They’ll want to know what value you drove and how fast.
